  • What is the "Nikkei Bridge"?

The Nikkei Bridge is composed of young adults and professionals, dedicated to serving the Japanese-American community, assisting the Asian-American community, and forming business, cultural and professional networks between Japanese-Americans and Asian Americans throughout the greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas.

The Nikkei Bridge was originally created by a small group of friends, dedicated to preserving the generations of Japanese American history and culture. We have included pictures on this website, to try and paint a true picture of Nikkei Bridge, its activities and its members. We hope that this will give you an idea of what Nikkei Bridge is and who its members are. Back to top.

What makes the "Nikkei Bridge" different from other organizations?

The Nikkei Bridge is a grass-roots organization of young adults who are committed to working on projects that benefit the Japanese-American and Asian-American communities, and also bring young adults together who share these same goals. Nikkei Bridge focuses its efforts on the Japanese American community and serves in a very hands-on manner that can provide a more immediate reward of helping others.

The Nikkei Bridge also hosts and sponsors numerous social events to insure that members share and celebrate their time with others. We consider ourselves to be a well-rounded and friendly group that is small enough to know each other well yet large enough to make a difference. Back to top.

    Please describe your typical member.

Our members are typically 20~30 year-old working professionals and includes teachers, accountants, lawyers, engineers, financial professionals and many more. Some of these individuals have had previous contact to the Japanese American community through college groups or family ties. However, we have just as many who are seeing our projects for the first time. Although most members live in Los Angeles, our members come from all over Southern California, which include Irvine, Oxnard, and Riverside. Back to top.

Is The Bridge just for Japanese Americans?

No, it is not. We encourage membership regardless of one's ethnic background. Although our focus is on Japanese American issues, we hope to someday branch out into the service of other ethnic groups to also learn about other cultures and expand our horizons. Back to top.

Do you have to be a certain age to join?

No. Age is not a factor with our organization as much as participation and dedication are! We encourage all people of all ages to join. Our average member is 20~30 years old, but we welcome people of all ages. Back to top.

A portion of your mission statement reads "...to enrich the lives of (the Japanese American communities) young adult members". How do you accomplish this?

We enrich the lives of our members by planning various and diverse events. We provide the opportunities for our members to experience new activities in a wide range of areas including community service and cultural awareness. We also sponsor and provide numerous social events throughout the year, including our annual Autumn Benefit Ball and Casino Night, Summer Luau, annual ski trip to Mammoth, and July 4th Picnic.

Although it is up to each member to take these events to heart, we try to make it easy to participate and contribute. We do all the planning, all you have to do is come and have a great time! Back to top.

How are events different from those I did when I was a kid?

We choose events that are new and interesting. Our members have a direct voice in determining the events that Bridge sponsors. Events that were very popular and have since become annual events including road trips to Las Vegas and ski trips to Mammoth Mountain. We continuously look into joint projects with other organizations to increase mutual exposure to our membership base.

But remember, the activities are always open for discussion. If there is something that you have always wanted to do, just let us know and you may be surprised to find that others members may share your enthusiasm! Back to top.

I don't have a lot of time. Can I still be an active member of this group?

Absolutely yes! We know that there are a lot of things that happen when you are about to start your career. We only ask that you can participate as often as you can. How much you want to be involved is entirely up to you! We also provide a newsletter to get you information and schedule of events early so that you can plan your time efficiently. We also send out numerous e-mail reminders to inform you of upcoming events. The newsletter and e-mail also cut down on the number and time spent on meetings. Back to top.

There are several other more "established" groups that serve the Japanese American community. How does the "Nikkei Bridge" differ from these other groups?

Many other established community groups are geared toward older members. Bridge does not intend to directly compete with these groups and instead, Bridge supports many of those organizations. We provide this support by informing our members through newsletter articles and organizing joint events. We hope that this additional exposure will encourage our members to support and participate in these other organizations and further their own interests. Back to top.

    Jenny Hu
Sr. Decision Support Analyst at CHLA (Childrens Hospital Los Angeles)

It is an honor to have Jenny Hu as our Bridgster of the month. Jenny joined Nikkei Bridge in the fall of 2005 to have fun and meet people. Her first Nikkei Bridge event was the Halloween party in 2005. Her interests include eating, sleeping, traveling, random roadtrips, reading, adventures w/family and friends. She especially loves to travel. She loves big cities, tropical places, cities with lots of history and has been to Europe and Asia multiple times. Some of Jenny's favorite foods include cookies and cream ice cream and yummy cocktails like kir royal. When you see Jenny at our next event, say "Hi!" and congratulate her for her service as a Nikkei Bridge member.
